Special "endless" desiccant capsule Slice Engineering will solve your wet filament problem. More

If you store filament incorrectly, it can absorb moisture from the environment. Which can cause complications when printing and, ultimately, a failed printout. All this will help you solve the special "endless" desiccant capsule Slice Engineering, which can be used repeatedly.

The capsule shell is made of stainless steel and is sized to fit exactly in the center of the filament spool. You can also use the dryer as a preventive measure for coils that you have just unpacked or even if they are not visibly damp.

The capsule uses aluminum oxide for drying, which is not toxic and is up to 10 times more effective in drying than silica gel (used in desiccant bags). It is so effective that it can dry the surface moisture of the filament as well as the water particles that are inside the fiber. Learn more in the TEST document in the Files section.

Humidity indicator:

The package also includes a humidity indicator that works as a hygrometer and displays the relative humidity level in the box/bag where it is placed. The indicator works simply:

  • If the lower circle turns pink, it means that you will need to "recharge" the desiccant soon.
  • If the middle circle turns pink, it's time to "recharge".
  • If the top circle turns pink, this is an indication that the filament may have absorbed moisture and needs to be dried before further storage.

Before first use, it is necessary to let the indicator adapt to the environment in which you put it for a while, because it can be affected by the humidity of the surrounding environment during storage and transportation. If you are going to get a hygrometer, we recommend one that has a high relative humidity resolution, as the cheaper ones can usually only detect approximate humidity.

 "Recharging" desiccant capsules

Since the capsules work on the principle of absorbing the moisture in their surroundings, after some time of use, the capsule will contain too many water molecules. At that moment, you simply need to dry the capsule again - heat the oven to approx. 200 °C and put the entire stainless steel capsule in it for approx. 2 hours.

Instructions for use:

Remove the clear plastic wrap from the capsule, remove the cap by turning clockwise and insert into the center of the filament spool. Store the coil in an airtight box or plastic bag with an airtight seal. Insert the moisture indicator into the filament packaging and let the capsule work. The desiccant capsule will reduce the relative humidity (RH%) to almost 0 in an airtight container over the course of approximately 6 - 10 hours.

Note: if you were to turn the plastic cap counterclockwise, you would remove the metal cap along with the plastic cap. After that, you might end up with little desiccant balls rolling around the room.
